Rosacea is a disease that affects the skin on the face. It often begins as redness that looks like a blush across the nose, cheeks, chin or forehead. Other symptoms may also occur such as small blood vessels across their nose and cheeks. The skin of the nose may become red and thick. This is known as rhinophyma. A chronic skin eruption, rosacea produces flushing and dilation of the small blood vessels in the face, especially the nose and cheeks. Papules and pustules may also occur but without the characteristic comedones of acne vulgaris. Rosacea is most common in white women between ages 30.
Symptoms of Rosacea
There are several symptoms and conditions associated with rosacea. These include frequent flushing, vascular rosacea, inflammatory rosacea, and several other conditions involving the skin, eyes, and nose.
Frequent flushing of the center of the face–which may include the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin–occurs in the earliest stage of rosacea. The flushing often is accompanied by a burning sensation, particularly when creams or cosmetics are applied to the face. Sometimes the face is swollen slightly.
Cause of rosacea
The cause of rosacea is unknown. There are several theories regarding the origin of overactive facial blood vessels and inflammation, including genetic, environmental, vascular, inflammatory factors.
Hair follicle mites (Demodex folliculorum) may be involved in at least some cases, as these are found in greater numbers within rosacea papules.
The exect cause of rosacea is unknown. Triggers that cause episodes of flushing and blushing play a part in the development of rosacea. Exposure to temperature extremes can cause the face to become flushed as well as strenuous exercise, heat from sunlight, stress, anxiety, cold wind, moving to a warm or hot environment from a cold one such as heated shops and offices during the winter. Certain medications and topical irritants can quickly progress rosacea. If redness persists after using a treatment then it should be stopped immediately. Some acne and wrinkle treatments that have been reported to cause rosacea include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, high dosages of isotretinoin, benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin.
In searching for a customized rosacea treatment plan, some may consider the concept an alternative rosacea medicine or a natural rosacea treatment. An essential method to improve rosacea can be found in basic lifestyle changes. A rosacea sufferer can still enjoy the same lifestyles while reducing their level of stress, reducing weight while improving muscle tone, and still experience a much greater degree of rosacea clearing.
